Essential tremor is a nervous system disorder (neurological disorder) that causes a rhythmic shaking. Essential tremor can affect almost any part of your body, but the trembling occurs most often in your hands — especially when you try to do simple tasks, such as drinking from a glass, tying shoelaces, writing or shaving. Unfortunately for Robert Frisch, a concert violinist, he acquired the illness in the peak of his career. At first he didn’t pay much attention to the trembling since he can still play the violin. After quite sometime, when he hits high notes, his hand would start to tremble. He would not be able to finish the piece he’s playing because of this. Desperate in finding a solution, Frisch looked for doctors who can solve it for him. Doctors were also baffled as to how to cure this kind of illness. Doctors then decided on the experimental Deep Brain Stimulation procedure surgery. During the surgery, a tiny electrode was implanted into the musician’s brain, which the doctors say would enable him to control the tremors with the flick of a switch. Crucially, for the surgery to be successful, the electrode had to be implanted into precisely the right spot. As doctors could operate on Frisch without him feeling any pain, they can clearly see where the tremor is originating from. As Frisch’s tremor was mild, however, the path wasn’t clear enough for doctors to see. Since it was everytime that Frisch hits high notes that the tremors would occur, the doctors came up with the idea of operating on the patient while playing his violin. With this, doctors can accurately see when and where the tremors come from. The operation went as planned and the musician now carries a small device which enables him to turn his tremor off and on with a switch that controls the stimulator. Follow @pinoygeeks
