VIDEO: Helmet cam shows motorcyclist’s last moments before 97-mph collision with car
UK – The family of a man killed when his motorcycle collided with a car last year has released the footage showing his final moments as caught on his camera helmet. They hope that it would serve as a warning to other motorists to be more careful when driving. The shocking footage, released by the family in coordination with the police, shows David Holmes, 38, driving his motorcycle on June 8 at around 97 miles per hour at A4 highway in Honingham, Norfolk when he collided with a car trying to make a turn at a junction. The video also shows that minutes before the crash, Holmes had been outrunning several other cars—some dangerously close—and reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour on the highway. Holmes was thrown clear from his motorcycle. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the car, Benjamin Austin, pleaded guilty to negligent driving resulting in a death last April and was sentenced to 130 hours of community labor. He was also barred from driving a car for 18 months. The presiding judge noted that both Holmes and Austin had been at fault, the former for driving way beyond the road’s 60-mile speed limit and the former for “simply not seeing the motorcycle.” Holmes’ bereaved mother Brenda, 62, said that she always knew that Holmes “loved speed, but he also loved life.” According to her, Holmes’ love affair with motorcycles began when his father bought him one for his 16thbirthday. She also described Holmes as a “wonderful son” and said that although she cannot turn back the time, she hopes that her son’s legacy can continue to help others especially where road awareness is concerned. The local police chief agrees with her sentiment and feels confident that the video, although shocking and harrowing, may ultimately save some lives someday.
